Learning the alphabet is a major milestone in the life of a child. When children learn the alphabet and start to read, it sets them up for success with other subjects, such as math and science. Learning letter sounds is not something that has to follow mastering sight word recognition, it can be done simultaneously.
Social and emotional learning (SEL) refers to the process through which children and young people develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to:
- understand and manage emotions
- set and achieve positive goals
- feel and show empathy for others
- establish and maintain positive relationships
- make responsible decisions
Why is LOTC so important?
Learning outside the classroom (LOTC) refers to educational experiences that take place outside the traditional classroom setting, such as in parks, museums, nature reserves and at home. These visits can also help to inspire children and young people and encourage them to pursue their interests and passions.
